The new approach to ANC emphasises the quality of care rather than the quantity. For normal pregnancies WHO recommends only four antenatal visits. Thus, the principal objective of FANC is to help women maintain healthy pregnancies through:

• Health promotion and disease prevention.
• Early detection and treatment of complications and existing diseases.
• Birth preparedness and complication readiness planning.
