Around the age of the menarche, the female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone are responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics, including:
- Development of the breasts
- Broadening of the pelvis
- Increased activity of sweat glands and oil glands in the skin
- Growth of pubic and armpit hair

Menopause is the period around the ages of 48-50, when menstruation ceases
