Does the pregnant woman have any of the following warning symptoms:

Not wanting to eat

Not gaining weight: A healthy woman gains between 9 and 12 kgs during pregnancy. 

Weakness and general ill-health

Sores, rashes, or other skin problems

Sore or bleeding gums

Stomach problems or diarrhoea

Burning or numbness of the feet

If a woman gains weight suddenly near the end of her pregnancy, it may be a sign of twins or pre-eclampsia. Refer her to the nearest higher health facility

The effects of iodine deficiency are:

Goitre (swelling in the front of the neck)

Short children 

Children with deafness

Children with cretinisim, a disability that affects thinking

If you suspect that a pregnant woman's health is poor due to inadequate nutrition, or lack of iodine: advise her about good nutrition and iodine supplementation
