There are two methods for finding the baby's position -- feeling the mother's abdomen (palpation), and listening (auscultation) to where the fetal heartbeat is strongest.

Healthy signs

There is only one baby in the uterus.

The baby is head down at the time of birth (check for its head. See Figure a)

Warning signs

The baby's feet or bottom are down at the time of birth (breech)

If the ends of the baby seem to be in the mother's sides like in Figure b, the baby is probably lying sideways.

The mother has twins or triplets (listen for two fetal heartbeats)

If the baby's head is up (breech position), or if it is lying sideways, it will be safer for the mother to give birth in a hospital
