COVID-19 Screening at PoEs
- COVID-19 Screening at PoEs is a public health measure intended to reduce the international spread of COVID-19 by detecting:
- Departing travelers who are sick and/or exposed to COVID-19 and preventing them from leaving the country or
- Travelers who are sick and/or exposed to COVID-19 upon arrival and directing them to appropriate care and follow up
- COVID-19 screening at the points of entry include
- Primary screening - observing travelers for obvious signs of illness, measuring temperature, and collecting information on travel and exposure history by using the traveler’s health declaration form.
- Secondary screening - having a healthcare or public health professional conduct an additional public health assessment of ill or potentially exposed travelers identified through the primary screening process
- Exit screening - to identify outgoing passengers with possible symptoms of, or risk of exposure to, COVID-19, and to prevent them from further travel. Exit screening should be paired with travel restrictions.
- Entry screening - it is screening of incoming passengers immediately after disembarkation from the aircraft. Temperature screening alone may not be very effective as it may miss travelers incubating the disease or travelers concealing fever during travel, or it may yield false positives (fever of a different cause). If temperature screening is implemented, it should be accompanied with:
- Health messages : Dissemination of health messages informing persons on signs, symptoms and where to seek medical support if needed.
- THDF (Travelers Health Declaration Form): that collects information on symptoms, history of exposure and contact information.
