• These are set of guidelines designed to create physical, chemical and mechanical protective barrier between microorganism and person to prevent the spread of infection (the barrier serves to break the diseases transmission cycle)
• Example of barriers:
• Physical – PPE 
• Mechanical barrier – high level disinfection and sterilization
• Chemical – antiseptic and disinfectant
