Three sequential steps (the sequential approach):

Step one: The Trauma Primary Survey:

• The ABCDE's

Step two: The SAMPLE History

• Signs and Symptoms, Allergies, Medications, Past Medical History, Last in's and out's and Events Surrounding the Injury

Step three: The Trauma Secondary Survey

• A full head-to-toe systemic examination

Always first resolve an identified life-threatening condition before moving on in the sequential approach and always reassess the patient frequently with the sequential approach especially if they change condition.
