Assess, classify and treat all young infant with jaundice (from birth up to 2 months)

Signs Classification Treatment
  • Palms and soles yellow OR
  • Skin or eyes yellow for the age less than 24 hours OR age 14 days or more.
SEVERE JAUNDICE
  • Advice the mother to give more frequently breastfeeding. If the child can feed.
  • Advice the mother about kangaroo care (wrap the child with warm, dry cloth like gabi).
  • Advise mother on the need for further referral.
  • Refer URGENTLY to the health centre or hospital.
  • Only the skin and eyes are yellow.
JAUNDICE
  • Advice on frequent breastfeed.
  • Advice mother to keep the young infant warm.
  • Expose to sunshine 20 to 30 minutes every day.
  • Advise mother when to return immediately.
  • Give follow-up within two days.

Treat the sick young infant birth up to 2 months when referral is not possible
