In study session V you have learnt 

• A disaster is an unexpected accident resulting from natural or man-made factors (or a combination of both) that has a negative impact on the daily lives and living conditions of humans and flora. 
• It is the Incident that occurs in a sudden manner, complex in nature, resulting in the loss of lives, damages to property or the environment as well as affecting the daily activities of local community. 
• Natural disasters: include floods, droughts, earthquakes, cyclones, hurricanes, tornadoes, typhoons, landslides, volcanic eruptions etc. 
• Man-made disasters: include chemical accidents, oil spills, radiological accidents, conflicts/wars, mass population displacement or refugee emigration, forest fires etc. 
• Disaster management aims- To reduce, or avoid, the potential losses from hazards, Assure prompt and appropriate assistance to victims of disaster, Achieve rapid and effective recovery 
• Disaster management should consider all aspects/ not only human/ 

- Need to be developmental strategies 

- Follow all steps/cycles of disaster management 

- Uses the principle of "preventions is better" 

• The Disaster management cycle is an ongoing process by which governments, businesses, and civil society plan for and reduce the impact of disasters, react during and immediately following a disaster, and take steps to recover after a disaster has occurred. 
• Component of Disaster Management cycle- Risk Management which includes Prevention, Mitigation and Preparedness; Crisis management/After disaster has occurred/ which includes Response and Recovery
