In 2000 (1992 in the Ethiopian Calendar), The World Health Organization (WHO) has set eight Goals to achieve those burning issues of the world population in the year 2015.

The MDG has two important parts on the maternal and child mortality and morbidity which are the concerns of all health professionals and the community of the world.

Stop for a while, and think about the relationship between the MDG and the module you are studying now or postnatal care? Is there any relationship between the MDG and postnatal care?.
The relationship between these two terms is that, two of the MDG goals set to be achieved in 2015 were to reduce child and maternal mortality rates at least by half from the present situation by the year 2015.This is thought to be achieved through different strategies and programs which will improve the health status of both mothers and children.Proper postnatal care is also one of the strategies and programs used to improve or reduce maternal and child mortality and morbidity. Because most maternal and child (neonatal) morbidity and mortality will occur during the postnatal period. So the provision of good and effective postnatal care will have a higher contribution for these goals to be achieved.

The Role of Health Extension Workers in the Provision of Effective Postnatal Care

Nowadays, Ethiopia is thought to achieve the millennium development goals through the effective health policy of the country which was made by the millennium development goals. In order to achieve the MDG, the contribution of well-trained health extension workers is mandatory in health care service delivery areas especially in postnatal care at institutional as well as at house to house level through the provision of institutional and home visiting service to save the lives of mothers and newborn babies that will occur after the mother gave birth and until the end of the postnatal period. Because this is the time in which most maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity will occur. So the health extension workers are expected to play a great role in alleviating the mortality as well as the morbidity rates that will occur within this critical period through quality health service provision at institutional and home-based level and through bringing the change towards positive health behaviour within the community.
