Before you directly start your activities on postnatal care, you have to have enough information about the community in your working area.
For instance, you must know the total population of your working area you are going to serve. In addition to this you have to have the information about vital statistics, children below the age of five years, children below the age of one year, women of child bearing age, the number of pregnant women with their expected date of delivery, the number of TBAs in your area with their address, the number and name of community organizations in your kebele, and the addresses of every important people in your area. This will help you know your target population for postnatal care, and because you need help when you conduct community mobilization and community participation.
In order to know the number of mothers who are eligible for postnatal care you can calculate the number of pregnant mothers in your catchment area. This is usually calculated as 4% from the total population in your catchment area were thought to be pregnant mothers.
Besides, you should also have to know, the number of neonates in your catchment area ideally the number of neonates is equal to the number of pregnant mothers excluding the twin deliveries which is thought to be 4% of the total population.This can be calculated as follows.
