Table: 5.2. Steps to follow during home visiting
- Greetings.
- Ask about her well-being; make general conversation with the mother and the family.
- Explain why you came here, and what you are going to do, and get her consent.
- Take out the necessary equipment from the bag and place it on a clean cloth.
- Wash your hands.
- Collect the mother‘s information (postnatal checklist and referral note if needed).
- Collect the newborn‘s information (postnatal checklist and referral note if needed).
- Examine the mother and baby.
- Counsel the mother about her health and baby‘s condition, as needed.
- Use counselling cards appropriate to the situation (e.g. on breastfeeding, LBW, etc.).
- Talk with the mother about the danger signs in the baby and herself.
- Praise the mother and reinforce positive behaviours.
- Complete the postnatal home visit form.
- Tell her to call you anytime she needs you and give her an appointment for the next visit.
