Table: 5.2. Steps to follow during home visiting

• Greetings.
  
• Ask about her well-being; make general conversation with the mother and the family.
  
• Explain why you came here, and what you are going to do, and get her consent.
  
• Take out the necessary equipment from the bag and place it on a clean cloth.
  
• Wash your hands.
  
• Collect the mother‘s information (postnatal checklist and referral note if needed).
  
• Collect the newborn‘s information (postnatal checklist and referral note if needed).
  
• Examine the mother and baby.
  
• Counsel the mother about her health and baby‘s condition, as needed.
  
• Use counselling cards appropriate to the situation (e.g. on breastfeeding, LBW, etc.).
  
• Talk with the mother about the danger signs in the baby and herself.
  
• Praise the mother and reinforce positive behaviours.
  
• Complete the postnatal home visit form.
  
• Tell her to call you anytime she needs you and give her an appointment for the next visit.
