In this Study Session, you have learned:
- How to counsel the mother on optimum breastfeeding, signs of good positioning, signs of healthy attachment during breastfeeding, and also the signs of proper suckling of the newborn baby.
- You have also learned that what advantages do exclusive breastfeeding has.
- Signs that will indicate that the baby is not getting enough breast milk and what makes the baby refuse breastfeeding and the management these conditions.
- The commonest abnormal breast conditions which will affect breastfeeding and their management such as breast fullness, breast engorgement, closure of the milk ducts, mastitis both infectious and noninfectious type and breast abscess with their sign and symptoms and their management.
- You have also expected to counsel the HIV positive mother on breastfeeding and the alternative feeding for the baby regarding the AFASS criteria.
- Newborn babies, whether they are preterm or not, should be kept warm with the application of the warm chain principle.
