22. I have heard that some children get diseases that they have supposedly been immunised against. How can this be true?
- Unfortunately, no medical intervention works perfectly.
- Nevertheless, the vaccines we provide are extremely effective when the child receives all of the doses needed.
- But since vaccines are not 100% effective, a small number of vaccinated children will still get the disease. Their bodies do not respond enough to the vaccine.·
- The vaccine still helps them. They will get less sick than if they had not been vaccinated, because their bodies are at least partially prepared for the disease.
23. Isn’t natural infection better than immunisation?
- Infection usually does cause better immunity than vaccination. However, the price paid for natural disease can include:
- paralysis
- permanent brain damage
- liver cirrhosis/cancer
- deafness
- blindness
- pneumonia
- death
